The Chennai Corporation on Friday introduced Blackberry phones in 10 wards to help in the tax
According to Mayor M Subramanian, the 10 Blackberrys were bought for Rs 4.35 lakh. The scheme will later be extended to the remaining wards.
“The system expedites the process of collection. Bill collectors need not carry loads of documents anymore. Data are uploaded to the main server immediately and the tax payers get to know details of their arrears,” Mayor Subramanian said.
“On day one, Rs 80 lakh was raised,” Rajesh Lakhoni, commissioner, Chennai Corporation, told TOI. Cheques given by tax-payers are immediately sent to the banks; earlier the process took days. Further, tax payers get a computer-generated receipt soon after payment through a Blackberry, Lakhoni added.
The online tax collection, introduced last year, has helped bring down the queues in front of payment counters at the zonal offices.
