Setting root user password in ubuntu

If you want to reset root password, you need to use sudo passwd command in shell.

Open shell/terminal/console

Applications » Accessories » Terminal.

In shell, type sudo passwd. It will ask you password. Type your login password.

micman@micman-desktop:~$ sudo passwd

Password:

Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:

thats all !

to gain root prompt is to launch a shell as root

micman@micman-desktop:~$ sudo su
Password:
root@micman-desktop:/home/micman#

or

:~$ sudo sh
Password:
sh-3.1#
