  • Tamilnadu gets its third Nobel laureate

Dr. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has proved how antibiotics cure various diseases by blocking functions of ribosomes in bacteria.

  • 11 run over  by trains in a single day

Eleven people died while crossing railway tracks on Tuesday 6-10-2009, under the Chennai division of the Southern Railway. Majority of the victims were talking on mobiles while crossing the railway tracks. The Chennai Beach- Tambaram line claims most of the lives because of the high frequency of trains and density of commuters. On an average 7-10 persons die everyday after being run over by trains in the city.

  • E-waste policy to roll out in November

The policy will standardize the process and formulate the guidelines for government departments on handling e-waste. Chennai ranks 4th among the 65 cities that generate more than 60% of the total e-waste generated in the country.

  • Newborn slips through train toilet, survives

In Kolkata, a baby, born in a train toilet, slipped through the filthy discharge chute on to the tracks. The distraught mother flung herself from the speeding train in complete darkness to rescue her baby. They were both found a few minutes later, shaken but alive.
