Installing w32codecs in Ubuntu 9.04


Support for WMV, RealMedia and other formats has been bundled into the w32codecs package. This package is not available from the Ubuntu repositories due to licensing and legal restrictions.This package is also needed to play .DAT video files.

Edit /etc/apt/sources.list file and enter the following repositories save and exit the file

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

For Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Users

deb feisty free non-free
deb-src feisty free non-free

Now you need to copy the key using the following command

wget -q -O- | sudo apt-key add –

Update the source list using the following command

sudo apt-get update

Install Codecs using the following command

sudo apt-get install w32codecs libdvdcss2

Using above download locations you can install most of the mutimedia codecs for ubuntu.

sudo apt-get update

Karmic Koala : successor to Jaunty Jackalope

With Ubuntu users eagerly awaiting the release of Jaunty Jackalope or Ubuntu 9.04, The open source community has even announced the successor to Jaunty : Ubuntu 9.10 or Karmic Koala ,which will see the light of day in October 2009.
yes ! Koala will be the official mascot of ubuntu 9.10 !!

Here’s what the Ubuntu community feels about the features they expect in Karmic Koala :

  • Smooth and flicker free startup
  • Newer look
  • Support for opensource version of Microsoft’s Surface techonolgy
  • Probably an interface similar to OS X (not in style but in effects).
  • Ububox – an Openbox mod designed for Ubuntu!

Ubuntu 9.04 alpha released


Ubuntu´s  9.04 or the Jaunty Jacakalope´s alpha version has been released.No live CD . The full  public user version is expected to be released in April 2009 with support till October 2010.Intended features for procurement include faster boot time and integration of web services and applications into the desktop interface.

The desktop installation of Ubuntu 9.04 is expected to include, among other programs, GIMP 2.6, GNOME 2.26, Mozilla Firefox 3.1, 3.0, and Pidgin 2.6. The server installation may include MySQL 5.1, PHP 5.2 and Python 2.6. Ubuntu 9.04 may use Linux 2.6.30 and X.Org 7.5. GNOME 2.26 is expected to include support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 in Evolution.
